Government
The ancient Greece government was democratic(which means rule by the people). In the government Men and women did not have equal rights. Women were not considered citizens of Greece, as you know. Only the men could vote and take place in the assembly. There were no professional lawyers or judges, instead there were juries. And boy there were a lot of people that belonged to the juries, between 101-1001 people in fact. This was because they wanted to prevent bribery. The council-500 men-made up the proposals debated by the assembly, which took place very nine days. 6,000 citizens attended to help debate the proposals. To prove innocence or guilt Greeks used a special bronze coin. If the coin had a hole in the middle it means innocent but if the coin were solid in the middle it would mean guilty. To decide whether the people think the criminal is guilty or not the Greeks would choose one of the two coin and place their thumb and index finger over the hole or rod. Punishments were matched with the type of law that was broken. Punishments included exile, fines and even death.
